The choice between these systems depends on factors like roof size, slope, and shading. 

Certain roof areas may be exempt from these requirements, including: 

• Areas occupied by mechanical equipment or required for access under fire codes. 
• Spaces designated for recreational use integral to the building’s function. 
• Roofs with slopes greater than 17% (2:12 pitch) where green roofs are not feasible. 
• Roofs where solar PV installation is impractical due to shading or insufficient size to meet minimum capacity requirements. 

Affordable housing projects may have delayed compliance deadlines or modified requirements as determined by the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD).
